The Long Awaited Call

One March 3rd, 2016, Chase met with President Cowan one last time and his mission papers were submitted. Within 2 weeks, we found out that further information was needed by the Mission Department regarding a health issue that Chase had. Fifteen weeks and lots of prayers, tears, frustrations and emails passed. June 18th, Chase left to California for a week-long “Guys’ Trip” in a Newport beach house. Only 6 hours after he left, I slowly opened the mailbox and saw the large white envelope that we all had anxiously been waiting for! It didn’t take long to decide that we would pack up the family and head to California to hand deliver this special envelope to Chase. We left bright and early Sunday morning and drove as fast as legally possible, straight to Chase!

With many of his closest friends around him and extended family and friends watching over Facetime and Periscope, Chase opened his mission call. It was fast. It was informal. It was certainly non-traditional. It was perfect! Chase appeared calm until seconds before he opened the envelope, when it was obvious that his hands and voice were a bit shaky. He read his call aloud and a huge smile spread across his face.

Dear Elder Beckerman,

You are hereby called to serve as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. You are assigned to labor in the Washington Tacoma Mission. It is anticipated that you will serve for a period of 24 months.

You should report to the Mexico Missionary Training Center on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. You will prepare to preach the gospel in the Spanish language.

Everything happened so fast and within minutes the boys were ready to head back to the beach. Like any parent, our biggest fear was the possible disappointment that Chase might feel in not getting that “perfect call”.  For Chase, his dream mission was Brazil. I quickly took a minute to corner him in his room and asked how he was feeling about his call. His response confirmed to me that the giant smile on his face was real. He told me he was excited to go to Washington and that he was really hoping to learn a new language so he was thrilled that he would be heading out on a Spanish speaking mission.

Our family has quickly become Tacoma, Washington’s biggest fans! It didn’t take long for us to realize that getting to serve in Washington is like serving in a little piece of heaven right here on earth.
